Nambeelup has been chosen as the location for the Australian-first Bushfire Centre of Excellence.

Premier Mark McGowan has announced that Lakes Road will be the location for the new Bushfire Centre of Excellence.

The Shire of Murray beat out 13 other applicants to house the $18 million facility.

The establishment of the centre was deemed essential after the devastating Waroona bushfires.

The Premier made the announcement yesterday morning with Emergency Services minister Francis Logan, Department of Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm, Murray-Wellington MP Robyn Clarke and Mandurah MP David Templeman.

McGowan said the location was chosen due to its close proximity to major transport links.

"Our volunteer and career firefighters work under extremely challenging conditions across our big state from Esperance to Kununurra and everywhere in between," he said.

"The Bushfire Centre of Excellence will help improve bushfire management outcomes through leadership, collaboration and innovation across the sector."

Designs are due to be completed shortly, with construction to start soon after.
