Patients in Rockingham are set to benefit from a new plastic surgery service at Rockingham General Hospital.

The service started on January 31 and is set to complete over 500 surgeries in its first year.

Rockingham Hospital will offer low to medium complexity surgeries for patients in the South Metropolitan Health Service area.

Services will include a significant number of skin cancer surgeries.

State health minister Roger Cook says its beneficial for patients to be able to remain close to home where possible.

"The focus is always about providing the best experience for our patients," he said.

"The new plastic surgery service is a great win for them as we are now providing improved access to these services across the region."

The new service is in partnership with Fiona Stanley and Fremantle hospitals.

The most complex plastic surgery cases will continue to be performed at Fiona Stanley Hospital, with less complex cases being undertaken at Fremantle.
