City of Rockingham councillor Rae Cottam has been announced as the candidate for the Legalise Cannabis Party ahead of next month's Rockingham by-election.
Ms Cottam has been a councillor for the Rockingham/Safety Bay Ward since 2019.
The Party’s Parliamentary Leader Hon. Dr Brian Walker MLC said he was thrilled to see a young indigenous woman putting her hand up to represent the legalisation movement within her local community.
“We’re very happy to welcome Councillor Cottam as our candidate in the upcoming by-election, and I look forward to the enthusiasm and can-do attitude that she will bring to our campaign,” Dr Walker said.
“A resident of Safety Bay, Rae was elected to the City of Rockingham Council in 2019, and has been a fearless advocate for the Rockingham & Safety Bay Ward for four years now, bringing a unique perspective to Council deliberations.
"What she has done so ably at a local government level, we’re now encouraging her to do as our next MLA for Rockingham, in a seat that’s crying out for a change."
Ms Cottam is up against her colleague, Rockingham deputy mayor Hayley Edwards, who is running as an independent in the by-election.
Liberal's Peter Hudson and Labor's Magenta Marshall are also in the race to replace Mark McGowan.
The by-election will be held on July 29.
