Construction is set to begin on stage two of the Mersey Point granite seawall on Monday August 23.

The $1.94 million project, which is fully funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, involves the replacement of the existing limestone seawall and timber beach stairs by a new 325 metre granite seawall and steel beach stairs located near Mersey Road.

There will be periods during the work when Arcadia Drive is closed between Mersey Road and Penguin Road.

Traffic management will take place when required and the City thanks the community for their patience in advance.

Carlisle Street boat ramp will also be closed during the works.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the new granite seawall would improve coastal protection to existing City infrastructure, including the Arcadia Drive road reserve.

“The City has carried out extensive coastal monitoring at Mersey Point for more than a decade. This analysis, combined with the potential for extensive erosion as highlighted in the City’s Coastal Hazard Risk Management Adaptation Plan, meant action needed to be taken,” Mayor Sammels said.

“As community members would have recently seen throughout winter, temporary repairs have been carried out intermittently following storm damage. The construction of the new granite seawall at Mersey Point will provide a long term solution to these issues.”

Works on stage two are expected to be completed by the end of November 2021.

Stage one of construction, which is the western end of the seawall towards Pengos Café, is planned to be completed in 2022.
