Oliver and Isla have made it a ‘hat-trick’, topping the list of officially registered baby names in Western Australia for the third consecutive year.
Results for 2022 compiled by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages showed that Oliver took out top spot for the eighth time in the past nine years, only slipping to third in 2019.
Oliver is still a long way behind John, the most popular boys’ name for 21 consecutive years from 1930, when records began, to 1950.
John held a place in the top 10 for 42 years in a row.
There were some notable changes to the 2022 list with perennial favourite William dropping out of the top ten for the first time since 2011, falling from fourth in 2021 to equal-eleventh.
Noah held down second spot for the second straight year, while Leo moved into third place (up from fifth) and Charlie had a resurgence, moving from ninth to fourth.
New entries in the top ten included Theodore, up from 13th to eighth place, and Luca which scraped into a three-way tie for tenth (up from 17th in 2021).
On the girls’ list, Amelia and Olivia tied for second place behind Isla. The biggest upward movers were Mia (eighth to fifth) and Lily (eleventh to equal-sixth).
Ava appears to have waned in popularity, sliding from second in 2021 to equal-eighth in 2022.
The most popular girls’ name on record is Margaret which topped the list for 22 consecutive years from 1930 to 1951.
Elsewhere in the 2022 top 50 lists were Harry (21), Muhammad (36) and Oakley (49) for boys and Luna (22), Sadie (35) and Nora (49) for girls.
