Fremantle Detectives have charged a 29-year-old man after a police chase in the Rockingham/Kwinana area on Wednesday 12 May 2021.
About 8:10am a stolen VW Amarok utility was sighted by police on Thomas Road, Medina. The vehicle had been stolen during a commercial burglary earlier in the morning in Bibra Lake.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, however it will be alleged the driver failed to stop and accelerated away. Officers lost sight of the vehicle shortly after.
A short time later a police helicopter crew observed the vehicle and monitored its movements as it drove through Wellard, Hillman and East Rockingham. It will be further alleged the stolen vehicle was driven in a reckless manner, including on a footpath and at high speed on the wrong side of the road, causing several other motorists to take evasive action to avoid being hit.
The stolen vehicle was abandoned in bushland near Mandurah Road and the driver attempted to flee on foot. The police helicopter crew directed police officers on the ground to the driver’s location and he was arrested shortly after abandoning the vehicle.
A 29-year-old man from Parmelia has been charged with:
- Steal Motor Vehicle
- Fail to Stop
- Reckless Driving (to evade police)
- No Authority to Drive
- Possessed Drug Paraphernalia
- Breached a Family Violence Restraining Order
He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Rockingham Magistrates Court today, Thursday 13 May 2021.
