The incomparable Dame Maggie Smith, the actor known for her sharp, verbal embellishments, who could wither you with one raised eyebrow, and melt you with her tart, rapier wit, has sadly passed away. She was 89 years old.

At 17 she was sent to The Oxford Playhouse School of Theatre where she was noticed by playwright Beverly Cross – the man she would marry 23 years later. She went on to star in Broadway and West End Shows – and in 1969 won her first Academy Award for Best Actress in the movie The Prime of Miss Jean Brody.

It was later in Smith’s career that she shot to international stardom when she starred as the wise grandmother Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey…

But Maggie was most loved for her role as the strict but loveable Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter Franchise.

Vale Dame Maggie Smith. Wands UP.

More sad news with the passing of Days of our Lives stalwart Drake Hogestyn who played John Black on the soap drama for almost 40 years, appearing in 4200 episodes. He was 70.

If you watched the AFL grand Final just for Katy Perry – I hope you were delighted as she opened proceedings… roaring onto the MCG!

Katy belted out a mashup of Roar, Dark Horse, Gorgeous, and Teenage Dream... before being joined by Aussie’s own Tina Arena... singing I Kissed a Girl, then followed by a funky remix of Chains

Katy finished her set with her new single Lifetimes, and her big hit, Fireworks.

That was the only real fireworks we saw on the day as the game was a bit of a fizzer… with the Brisbane Lions completely decimating Sydney Swans winning by double – 120 to 60!!
