David Lynch – the Oscar-winning, surrealist US film and TV director – passed away on Friday after battling emphysema. He was 78.

Lynch was renowned for his steadfast refusal to provide answers as to what his films meant, beginning with his bizarre movie Eraserhead in 1977.

He gave us The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and more, which put him on the map as a true auteur.

But he gained pop cult status for his twisted psychological crime thriller Twin Peaks in the 90s – which starred Kyle McLachlan.

25 years later, he gave us the third season… but there is still no answer as to what actually happened to Laura Palmer.

But for Lynch, death was part of a “continuum”. He believed: “No one really dies, they just drop their physical body … we’re all going to be fine at the end of the story.”

Vale, David Lynch.
