Oscar-winning actor and Hollywood legend, Gene Hackman has passed away – along with his wife, Betsy, and their family dog who were found dead in their New Mexico home on Wednesday. Hackman was 95.
Police are investigating the deaths as suspicious after finding the home's door unsecured and a pill bottle with pills scattered across the floor in the room where the bodies were discovered.
Hackman had a stellar career with over 70 films under his belt including The Firm, Hoosiers, The Heist, The Royal Tenenbaums, and who can forget his cold portrayal of the villain Lex Luthor in the original Superman movie franchise.
He earned two Oscars in his career which spanned 5 decades – one as New York Cop Popeye Doyle in the 1971 film The French Connection and as a violent sheriff in the 1992 film Unforgiven, he retired in 2004 and moved to New Mexico.
Hackman's daughters, Elizabeth and Leslie, and his granddaughter, Annie, released a statement to the New York Post Thursday.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy,” they told The Post on Thursday.
“He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to u, she was always just Dad and Grandpa,” the statement continued. “We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”
